I guess you don’t always choose when an adventure starts.
It’s been nearly a month since I left the monestary after having completed my training, and now I’m finding I have ample time on my hands to record my thoughts. Afterall, I appear to be stranded on an uncharted island. At least I’m not alone. But first, lets record what happened up to now…
So I woke up like any other morning at the monestary, had some breakfast, and went to talk with Tina to see what I might be doing today. Turns out they feel my training is complete and my work here is done. They knew my desires to go adventuring and they felt that I Was ready after working and training with them.
I received a small amount of coin to hold me over until I got my first adventuring gig in town. It was a bit of an emotional moment but I was ready for the adventuring life — so as much as I will miss my time in the monestary and my training with Tina, I was eager to go find my first adventure.
So I walked to town. On my way to the adventuring guild where I had been turned away before, I ran into a man I would later know as Daren who was looking for an adventurer to accompany him. I learned more, and then decided to give it a shot — the adventuring guild had shunned me before so an alternative seemed promising. I even had to prove my mettle against 5 other adventurers so I thought it would be a good test to see if I was ready.
I easily dispatched a few of the opponents and only was struck in return once, and I was deemed the ‘winner’ and was given a ticket to accompany Daren to an island where adventure and treasure and fame awaited. But, we had to travel nearly a week to the port to board a ship that would take more weeks to get somewhere… but I was ready to get there and start my adventure!
Well, on the way to the port, adventure found me for the first time. At a crossroads along the way, four skeletons raised from the ground and struck out at us. I dispatched one of them but got hit on the head and went down. When I awoke, Daren had taken care of the dangers and helped me to my feet. I wasn’t expecting to have to fend off undead on the way TO my adventure!
Well, it was just beginning. We finally got to the port and found our ship. We boarded it without much trouble, were shown to our rooms, and had an uneventful few weeks aboard. I hadn’t been on a ship before but found that it wasn’t too bad as long as I stayed below deck. I met a few people including my bunkmate Poncho who appears to be another person looking for adventure.
One day at sea, we ran into a bad storm. Waves crashing against the ship, thunder booming overhead. Many of the passengers were scared… I was no exception. I braced myself the best I could in the room… then we hit something! Debris flew everywhere in the room, but I managed to avoid most of it… but I got knocked on the head by a flying piece of wood and I was… well I was still breathing and up but really confused and weak. Daren told me to stay put while he went to see what was happening. Then I noticed we were taking on water, so I went into the hallway to ask for help! There were still two in my room including Poncho who were unconcious! I didn’t want them to drown so called out for help… I don’t think it was heard over the storm though… I went into the store room where something fell on top of me and I was out.
When I awoke, I was on a beach. The beach that apparently is now our home for a while. My bow is broken, and most of my arrows gone as well. I scrambled up in the darkness and looked for other passengers. I immediately saw a kobold who was from the ship, and not long after saw that Poncho had made it ashore as well. Apparently the tides took us all to land and we somehow did not drown.
I went to Poncho and he couldn’t see a thing in the darkness. The kobold came to our side as well. He told me his name… but it’s hard to get over the fact that he’s a kobold. I mean… a free kobold? That’s… civilized? Maybe? We used them as target practice and fought them off as children in the mines. But… in these circumstances I’ll accept any help I can get. We helped Poncho to his feet and told him to stay there. The kobold and I could see just fine in the darkness and went to check out where we were and look for other survivors.
Then I heard a scream, and I ran towards it to find two humans fighting off some rats. Assuming they were also from the ship, we immediately started to help them fight off the rats. I smashed several of them with my fists, elbows, and feet and they were quickly dispatched. We met some other survivors, who lit a torch. Poncho had made his way over as well and was very grateful for the torch so he could see.
We went up the beach and found more survivors. Some were hurt, and no one seemed to know what was going on. Morning soon arrived and fortunately all the survivors seemed to gather up near some rocks on the beach. I was amazed by how many survivors there were — how did all these people make it to the beach? Then I noticed the ship out to sea, broken and stuck against a huge rock. I guess it wasn’t that far, but I still thought someone might drown in such waters easily.
I found Daren and looked to him for guidance. He didn’t seem to have much. I tried to find out who should be in charge… and found out that none of the officers on the ship were here. There were some of the crew, and one of them finally did step up with an idea that I myself had mentioned not long before. Not sure if he heard me or not, but he could have certainly come to the same conclusion as I did.
We needed supplies. The boat wasn’t far. He took two of the crew with him and swam out to the boat. I went exploring a bit, but came back as he returned… he returned with a rope in tow which was excellent! More could make the trip to the boat to get supplies…. but.. that was the only thing he returned with. No supplies… and not his two other crewmen. They were attacked on the ship by the dead raising up and fighting back. They fled shortly after tying off the rope. I’m not sure what happened to the other two… maybe they drowned on their way back… but hopefully they just made it elsewhere on the island… but I’m not sure how they’d have missed us. And not found us yet.
But our best bet was still all the supplies on the ship. We needed food, weapons, survival gear, medical supplies… and they were all there, in sight. And we could get there easily enough with a rope. I looked around for people willing to go back to the ship and gather supplies, even if it did mean fending off some undead. The kobold, Poncho, and Daren were the only volunteers. The kobold asked for an hour to prepare some spells for the trip and we agreed. I used the time to try to get to know some of the passengers I hadn’t yet met.
I had originally guessed the boat was full of adventurers going to the island just like me, but after getting to know some of these people it seems that wasn’t the case. Many were going to work, some to learn, some to meet family. We had an assortment of passengers. I even found an apprentice priest who I asked to say a prayer for me before our journey to the ship. She seemed to know of the undead and said there shouldn’t be any there. (I should go ask her again now that I’ve seen them… but anyway.)
I also talked with many of the crew, who were taking the stronger ones from the group and heading north to look for shelter. They were leaving the next morning. I had every intention of trying to go with them at that point… but things change…
So anyway, we made our way to the ship. The others encountered undead on deck so I decided we should try to go in through a hole in the side of the ship, to try to get at least Daren his equipment back. We needed to be better equipped. I easily made a hole in the side of the ship, but I was in the wrong room – I was aiming for the room we’d been in. But there was a hole big enough to crawl through and soon enough I made it inside the ship, with the others behind me. We searched and found lots of food – and ate some – and we were on the way to our room when two of the bodies on the ground rose up to fight us. They were resiliant and my punches weren’t doing much against them, but I was able to get enough good blows in to keep one down while the kobold froze the other one. Daren and Poncho aren’t too good without a weapon and their sticks from the beach just weren’t cutting it.
So we got Daren’s weapon back and retrieved some other equipment, valuables, and clothing and blankets from the rooms. We explored this level of the ship, at which point Poncho stood on some obviously weak flooring and dropped a bunch of cargo and himself into the water below. At least he was able to climb back up easily enough. Poncho was able to force a door open into what appeared to be the ship doctor’s room, where we found a bit of medical equipment as well as a secret compartment…. which had an empty coffin in it. Very very creeepy. Not sure why… confusion… but we left it there…
We found the cook still alive… well, no, not alive, but standing. He turned around and slammed into me, knocking me out once again. The kobold apparently gave me a potion as I was back up not long later, with the cook dispatched. The room was full of useful equipment, including quite a few knives. We took what we could carry in some folded up sheets and pillow cases. We also decided we would rest before moving on, as I was very injured and the kobold needed to refresh his spells.
So that afternoon we awoke and Daren had taken inventory of the equipment as well as found some wine for himself to enjoy while we rested. I grabbed some of the knives and got ready to throw them so that I could stay further away from any more combat…
We went on deck and were immediately in combat again against 3 more of the now undead crew. Daren’s weapon looked invaluable at taking them down, although I was also good throwing these daggers. I never missed! We dispatched these three, which included what used to be the first mate, and moved towards the captain’s quarters. We weren’t sure he was in there, but wanted to let him come to us as we finally figured out that these guys at least moved slowly. I got some more great knife throws in including one that hit him in the eye! He seemed to stumble quickly towards me and Daren slashed him up really good with his huge sword. The captain fell, and we searched his quarters and the rest of the ship for any other equipment.
We started collecting the equipment on deck and figuring out a way to get it back, when Daren noticed how injured we were and mentioned his concern for us if there was a conflict about the food and supplies. We decided that we weren’t just going to hoarde the supplies to ourselves, but we would let the strongest leave to find their shelter and in doing so, protect ourselves and the supplies better – so we rested on the ship again and waited until midday the following day to return.
Daren and the kobold went over first and explained what was going on. They were going to ask for help surviving and basically for them to accept our leadership in exchange for sharing the supplies. We were going to need help to survive out here and wanted all the friends we could trust.
I ended up swimming back and forth all day transferring the cargo and I was exhausted by the end of the day and just wanted to sleep. We should find that priest in training and show her the medical supplies and she if she can help patch us up some…
Anyway, this is how adventure found me. I kept thinking I was on the way to adventure, on this island of treasure and fame, while the whole time I was already part of an adventure. I just hope that Daren, Poncho, the kobold, and myself can really help these people survive out here. And I hope some of them have the skills to help us survive in return. At least we have a good supply of warm blankets, food, and water. We need to find shelter soon though.. or try to build our own… but now I just want to sleep….
