Well a lot has happened lately.
When I last wrote, we were about to go check out a ghost ship to see if it had any valuables of worth. Well, it did, but it cost us Valara.
The four of us went out to the boat and started to look around. Runar picked up a gold coin off a dead body, and then the body rose and attacked us! We ended up fighting no small number of undead on that ship. We were able to handle them without much of a problem at first, and that first day we cleared the top deck of the ship, as well as found some very interesting things in the captain’s quarters – including a treasure map!
We went back to the Amazon camp to rest and returned the next day. We gathered most of the valuables on the top deck so we could load them on our boat when we were ready to leave. There were also lots of cannons and gunpowder on the ship, which seems like it could be very useful if they still worked… well the ones on the top deck didn’t seem like they would work.
So anyway, we had a ship to explore. We opened a hatch and found many more undead. My clever idea was just to shoot them through the hatch, but they were too smart for that and started climbing out of all the stairways towards us at the top after my first shot.
We were able to take care of that group of undead without too much trouble, so went further down on the ship to explore. We did find some cannons in good condition, but we also found a much more dangerous enemy.
What we assume was a vampire attacked us, and then turned himself invisible. Even my very keen senses couldn’t see or hear any sign of him, which seemed very strange to me, but he cornered Valara and was stabbing her… she healed herself the best she could and made a run for it, but got hit while running and fell unconcious. I thought if we could only find this guy, Valara might still have a chance. It wouldn’t be the first time someone could live through being knocked out in a fight…
Well, then the bastard of a vampire threw a ball of fire at us all, not only likely killing Valara with the blast but also setting off a chain reaction of fires and explosions from the gunpowder barrels!
With the ship being blown apart and burnt down, we rushed off the ship, unfortunately having to leave Valara behind.
We returned the next day after the fires and smoke cleared, and eventually found the vampire guy still alive… and he spoke with us. He wanted a boat, and would give us most of the ship’s bounty in exchange. A more than fair trade, if he hadn’t been the one to kill Valara… but the group conferred and this guy was just too dangerous for us. If he turned invisible again we had no way to find him to defeat him. We reluctantly agreed to his deal.
We came back — 4 of us again by the way, as one of Vin’Ta’s friends came along as well — with an extra boat. The vampire opened the passage to the loot, which was all underwater. All but Vin’ta’s friend could swim and hold their breath quite well, so she stayed on watch while the 3 of us took a dip.
I swam over and found the treasure quickly. And my, was there ever treasure! I started to grab a chest, but apparently it wasn’t as safe as we thought down here… two more undead things rose in the water and attacked! Runar and I were able to take them out, and then Vin’ta came along as we finished…. but apparently our blood in the water had attracted a bunch of sharks!
We took those out as well and fought our way back to the hatch so we could get a breath! Then we took several trips and hauled all the loot to the top of the ship, loading it on our boat. The vampire had one chest to himself, but it was hard to complain about that when we were looking at the largest pile of gold we had ever seen, or even ever thought we would see, in our lifetime. We were sure this would be enough to get everyone a ride off the island when we talked to the pirates!
Anyway, the vampire sailed off… I still don’t feel right about it, but he very well may have been able to kill us all if he wanted.
We took a trip back to Vin’Ta’s house and rested a couple days — as apparently I had come down with a fever.
Two days later, my fever broke and we decided to head towards the ruins to see about getting off this island!
We loaded up the boat with half of our gold and treasures, leaving the other half behind at Vin’ta’s house. The boat made for some quick travel, but we did run into some rough waters and an even rougher sea creature! This big thing came at us and it looked like a huge wave heading the wrong direction… I was able to spot that it was some creature and we steadied the boat and readied our weapons. It crashed into the boat, and even managed to grab ahold of me and throw me in the water, but fortunately we survived and the boat did too. We sure didn’t want to lose all our treasure in the sea…
Not too long after, we made it to the boat landing near the ruins. We debated for some time, then decided we were just going to drag our whole boat full of treasure to their camp. It took a few hours, but we arrived and were welcomed with open arms. They were not only excited to see the treasure, but that we had brought back someone to help them with the puzzle of the ruins as well.
We rested and traded with them (where we got ripped off a bit, but without Valara we were desperate for healing potions), and set out to check out the ruins area the next day.
That day didn’t go so well. We were attacked several times in the area of the ruins… some man eating plant, then a bunch of trolls who we only killed because the camp’s wizard set the lot of us on fire along with the trolls, and then some shadows… Runar got the strength sapped out of him hard and we had to head back.
We rested back at camp for a few days and Vin’Ta got a good look at the rubbings from the ruins and easily was able to solve the puzzle. Apparently it was a lullaby of her people, missing a few words.
When we were back at full strength, we headed back to the ruins and this time went directly to the path down into the locked door with the runes. Eric asked for the password, which Vin’ta supplied and the door opened right up.
We moved in slowly, past a couple doors, and Runar spotted a trap and disabled it. We moved into a room with a large statue and a few other doors, and Runar again saw something else suspicious… a pressure plate was being pressed down by the large statue. So he had the bright idea to move the statue… I have no idea why, but Vin’ta quickly helped him and then all hell broke loose.
The door behind Eric and his wizard buddy closed, trapping us in, and the statue came to life. The five of us (mostly VinTa and me) were able to drop the statue, but not without quite a bit of pain… There were a bunch of clicks and we warned the other two that they seemed to be coming from near them…
Then some more walls dropped, revealing what ended up being 6 more creatures of the undead! This place sure wasn’t friendly! They came at Eric and the wizard, but the wizard was ready and the two of them dissapeared… I have no idea where though, to this moment we haven’t heard from them since. Hopefully they’re ok.
Anyway, Runar froze for a moment, paralyzed with fear or something at the sight of this mummy or something. I don’t get why, we’ve been fighting undead for weeks it seems… VinTa froze too, and for a bit it was just me against a bunch of undead!
I unloaded more arrows than I care to count (its a good thing I bring plenty along these days), and Runar was back in action and we formed a wall in front of the paralyzed VinTa and took them out one by one…
VinTa finally snapped out of it at the last second and got the killing blow on the last of them…
Now… well. Normally I’d say lets go back to camp and rest, but it appears the door is still shut. I’m not sure if we’re trapped in here or what… but if we are, it may be the end of us. For now though, we’re leaning against the walls and resting after some quite unexpected combat.
If we make it out of these ruins alive, we’re definately going to deserve to get off this island…
